If you’re feeling hesitant about this idea because you’re not interested in the topics you think you ought to be interested in, remember that you’re allowed to be curious about anything! Follow your interests. Maybe you’d like to learn more about the science of baking bread, the life of Jesse James, the Perseverance Rover‘s Mars mission, or even the history of the flushing toilet! Learning new things doesn’t have to feel like a boring class. Head to the library, watch a documentary, or simply search the internet to exercise your brain.

Be Positive and Live in the Moment

Positivity should never be underestimated. Living your life with open arms and optimism is an excellent way to broaden your horizons. Every day, find things in life for which you’re grateful. In addition, try not to live in the past. Feel free to reminisce from time to time and look back on your past fondly, but try to keep your mind focused on the present moment so that you don’t miss any current opportunities!

Try New Things

Nurture Your Relationships

When you look back on your life, you probably don’t focus on the tests you took in school or your work projects. Instead, you likely think about the friendships you made and the people (and pets!) that you loved. So in your sunset years, do your best to stay connected with your friends, your family, and even your community. Nurture those relationships. Give your brother a call. Send your buddy a card on her birthday. Attend community events. Don’t let yourself have any regrets about keeping in touch with loved ones.

Open yourself up to the idea of a new you. In our youth, we often spend a lot of time trying to figure out who we are. In your senior years, don’t worry about your identity so much. You know who you are, and that person has likely changed a lot through the years. So don’t be afraid to change again. Go with the flow and give yourself permission to experiment. Don’t let your perception of yourself hold you back.

Don’t Take Life Too Seriously

Finally, always try to see the humor in a situation. When we take things too seriously, we often let fear of risk, failure, or embarrassment hold us back. So, don’t be afraid to look silly! Loosen up, and look for ways to make yourself (and others) smile.
